Pond Model “Thistle”

  • Before Restoration

    Owners wished for this Pond Model to be restored for the family legacy. It was called the “Thistle”, built by the deceased father, Gordon Bell, many decades ago.

  • Colour of Old Paint

    Looking at the remnants of old paint to see what the original colour was. The pancake hull had a few cracks or delamination’s in it that had to be addressed.

  • Filler Coat

    A skim coat of waterproof filler was applied to cover anomalies and cracks.

  • Original Colour

    Above waterline was white and below was a “chalkboard green”.

  • Deck Preparation

    All deck fittings were reconditioned and placed back after deck was sanded and varnished.

  • New Stand

    A new model stand was built and the mast and boom were sanded and varnished.

  • Detail of Stern

    The name Gordon Bell was preserved on the transom.

  • Cotton Sails

    My client wished to retain the original sails. This is the condition they were in before they were cleaned and pressed.

  • Boom Lacing

    Boom lacing and blocks were installed and mast stepped with stays attached. Rudder and rudder post installed.

  • Restoration Complete.

    The picture here gives the scale of the “Thistle” of Gordon Bell.

  • New Life for "Thistle"

    The owners liked the old sails on the restored hull, it gave it some historic elegance.
